We have lived in our house for three years this month, woo hoo! And we have yet to do anything with our yard except for make it messier and more full of trailers and broken vehicles that have hopes of one day being restored to a former glory (I think at this point their hope is waning, but I digress).
Marty is a landscaper, and you would think that means that our yard should be perfect. But Marty being a landscaper means he started his own landscaping company, which means a lot of 12 hours days, constant stress on his shoulders, and never enough time for even the necessities of life; much less frivolous things like beautifying your own yard. And then there was me... either pregnant or with a baby (or two) on my hip, and not a lot of use in the yard care department. I think our wonderful, seriously won-der-ful, neighbors have mowed our lawn about 300% more than we have. Bless them.
Anywho, I say all of that because this year is (maybe) the year that we re do the landscape! And if we don't get there, then we are going to plant some gosh darn trees because my toddler wants to play outside all gosh darn day and in the summertime I am cooking within about four minutes. So...TREES, this year, at the very least, so tonight we walked around the nursery to pick some out.
One of the awesome things about Utah (vs San Diego where I grew up), is that springtime is FULL of beautifully blooming trees all over. I want that. I want that all up in my yard. Here are some of the springtime favorites:
 |
| This is a Red Bud, it's not a great picture (I was just snapping pictures for notes and decided later to put them here), but they have these vibrant purple blooms. Just lovely. |
 |
| Just the name of this one is fantastic, "Prariefire Crabapple", I've seen these scattered about as we drive around and sheesh! I just love them. |
 |
This is called a Kwanzan Cherry Tree. This one is almost done with blooms, but the flowers are amazing. They look like Carnations, all over the tree. Two thumbs up, no THREE thumbs up.
|
We also need some good shade trees. I love trees that are more round and grow symmetrically, and I think this one may be perfect.
And we want to do some evergreen trees as well, those have always had a soft spot in my heart. Here are a few of the ones I liked.
And you have to have a beautiful Fall tree:
We're not 100% settled on what all we want, but we'll probably use several of these. Marty and I agreed on a lot of what we like, that was nice. Now we just have to decide what the final landscape will look like so that we know where we want to put the trees, and then decide if we want to put the trees in right now or try and wait a few more months and see if we will actually do our full landscape this year. Marty doesn't believe in doing phases when he's the one doing the work. Apparently it ends up being more expensive and more work in the long run. The only part he's willing to do in steps is the trees. I'll take it!
